The Golden Egg of Early Retirement

Darren Kincaid - Friday, May 21, 2010

I was surfing around the Internet and I cam across this great website.  I don’t know if you are familiar with Success

Magazine but they have a very dominate online presence.  I found a great video by Dave Ramsey on Retiring Wealthy.  He began to talk about IRA’s and tax free money.  With 401k’s and compound interest investments can grow  really fast.  I’m interested in seeing what else he has to say.  Go over to the website now and see for your self.  You will enjoy the wealth of other video’s as well.  Happy Wealth Friday.

BeeKeeping Do’s and Don’ts Free Webinar June 1, 2010

Darren Kincaid - Tuesday, May 18, 2010

So let me guess… It’s been a couple of weeks now since you’ve started beekeeping and you realized that you didn’t know as much about keeping bees as you thought you did? Well the good news is that Kim Flottum, Editor of Bee Culture Magazine, and Shane Gebauer, from Brushy Mountain Bee Supply in North Carolina will help you. On Tuesday June 1st, 2010 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm there will be a free webinar entitled 6 weeks as a beekeeper…Now What?

Join Kim and Shane as they discuss what’s going on in your hives, now that you’ve had them up and running for a few weeks. This information will be real sweet, pun intended, Lol. You will learn things about your queen that you may not have known. Is your queen doing what you expect for her to do and what is best for the colony? If not, then find out what you need to do now and next.

What pests to look out for and when you shouldn’t even worry about pests. In this webinar Kim and Shane will go over things such as what varroa mites are and how to deal with them. Also, when is the perfect time of the year to start beekeeping.

It’s always good to see pictures people doing what you want to do or are currently doing. These are a few inspiring beekeeping pictures, a little more encouraging than the man covered in bee’s in this picture. Here also is the link to sign up for the free beekeeping webinar.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Darren Kincaid - Sunday, May 09, 2010
We would like to wish all the moms in our community a wonderful Mother’s Day! Hope you enjoy your weekend and get to relax a little!

“A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.” ~Tenneva Jordan

Isn’t that so true! Hope your day is fabulous!

Leftover Ideas

Darren Kincaid - Wednesday, May 05, 2010
I have no problem with eating leftovers, but let’s face it some foods taste better than others the following day. Anything with lettuce on it is gross the next day, most bread based foods aren’t too tasty and fish is most definitely not any good as a leftover.

But, there are some awesome dishes that taste BETTER the following day! I had chicken alfredo for dinner last night and you better believe I had it for lunch today and maybe for dinner tonight! So, if your family ever complains about having leftovers, check out these dishes that taste much better as leftovers. Enjoy!

Paying Interest to get a Discount

Darren Kincaid - Friday, April 30, 2010

Many of us receive coupons in the mail to our favorite store which gives us a 15% or 20% discount on purchases in a given time period. While it may be very tempting to run right out to the store to get a “deal” on the latest style, gadget, etc., there are a few questions that you should ask yourself.

  1. How much do I want this item?
  2. Do I have cash to pay for the item(s) and
  3. If I put this on my credit card, how much will I pay in interest to get this “deal”.

For example, a new laptop retails at XYZ store for $1250. You purchase this laptop at XYZ store using your 20% coupon and charge the purchase on your credit card. The discounted price is $1000 and you are feeling pretty wonderful about the deal on your laptop. If you just make the minimum payment on your credit card with an interest rate of 18%, you will end up paying $923.12 in interest over 113 months (9.4 years). In this example, the total to purchase this laptop was actually $1923.12 which is definitely NOT a “deal”!

Knowledge is power and it is so important that you make informed decisions when making a purchase, especially when purchasing with a credit card. Check out this online credit card interest calculator!

Plan a Kentucky Derby Party

Darren Kincaid - Thursday, April 29, 2010
The 135th “Run of the Roses” is set for this weekend on Saturday, May 1st. Do you plan to watch? I love the Kentucky Derby, it reminds me of my father who loved horse racing and would always take me to Belmont when I was a kid growing up in NY.

If you really want to get into the excitement that surrounds the race, you can throw a Derby Party in your apartment. I found these great tips to make your Kentucky Derby party feel like you’re in the middle of the action at Churchill Downs. Here’s a quick list that will get you started.

1. Mint Juleps- The officially beverage of Churchill Downs

2. Southern foods like Tea sandwiches and Barbeque

3. A large screen TV with great sound.

4. Printed copies of the lyrics to “My Old Kentucky Home”

5. Tons of roses for decoration.

6. Huge Kentucky Derby hats for the ladies.

7. Racing forms with the horses names and numbers. You can even make a fake betting pool to keep it interesting.

Let us know if you have a party and share your pics on our Facebook page!

Triangle Deals and Savings

Darren Kincaid - Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Are you looking to save some money, but still want to go out and have a good time? I found this amazing website that will help you do just that. Groupon.com offers a daily deal such as half-off tickets to the theater, discounts off restaurants and unique, cheap packages to your favorite florist, photographer, etc.

It’s simple to sign-up and completely free. All you have to do is go to the site or wait for your daily email to start saving some dough!

My favorite deal offered was a $25 gift certificate to Cameron Bar & Grill for ony $12! That’s a savings of more than 50%. I plan to use it next week with my husband. That place is great!

I love that there is no obligation to buy at Groupon.com. You can even buy multiple deals to give to friends.

Has anyone at Abberly Place used Groupon.com?

Barbeque Time!

Darren Kincaid - Saturday, April 17, 2010
I love indulging in barbeque this time of year. It’s been so cold the last few months that I haven’t thought for a second about pulling out my grill and standing outside to cook.

The last few weeks have been different. I am grilling all the time since the weather is warmer and it’s been absolutely gorgeous outside.

Chicken is my favorite. I marinate it in Dale’s seasoning and cover it in homemade barbeque sauce. Then, I grill veggies in aluminum foil with a little olive oil and garlic. Yum!

I’m already starting to plan my Memorial Day menu. What’s your favorite meal to grill? Share your recipes on our blog!

An Excuse to be Happy on Tax Day

Darren Kincaid - Thursday, April 15, 2010
Today is the day that many people may dread. Uncle Sam wants his money, and you may feel kinda gloom about forking up the dough.

In efforts to ease your pain, Starbucks is giving everyone a gift today for Tax Day. Bring in your own mug and get a free cup of coffee. A great giveaway with an eco-friendly result!

The IRS may not be good to you, but Starbucks definitely is! Now go get your free cup, finish your taxes and breath a sigh of relief.

The closest location to Abberly Place is in Clayton at 13024 US Highway 70W . Enjoy!

Happy Easter!!

Darren Kincaid - Sunday, April 04, 2010

We hope all of our residents have a Happy Easter! Here’s “hop”ing you have a great day with your family!

Here’s the lyrics to my favorite Easter song!

Easter Parade
Never saw you look quite so pretty before
Never saw you dressed quite so lovely what’s more
I could hardly wait to keep our date this lovely Easter morning
And my heart beat fast as I came through the door

For, In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it
You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade

I’ll be all in clover and when they look you over
I’ll be the proudest fellow in the Easter parade

On the Avenue
Fifth Avenue
The photographers will snap us
And you’ll find that you’re
In the rotogravure

Oh, I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet
And of the girl I’m taking to the Easter parade
Lyrics by Irving Berlin
