North Carolina Waterfalls
Do you need somewhere to vacation this summer? We have the perfect place for you to visit, and it is right here in North Carolina!
Welcome to one of the most beautiful places on Earth - the mountains of western North Carolina!
There are literally hundreds of waterfalls and miles and miles of hiking trails in this area - you could spend a lifetime trying to see everything.
Western North Carolina is blessed to have over a million acres of national forests, national parks, state parks, and other public lands for our enjoyment and use.
The Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests comprise most of this land and offer multiple uses including hiking, water, mountain biking, camping, and horseback riding. Our state parks offer the same activities and contain some of the lesser know hidden jewels.
Rent vs. Buying
How many times have you thought that a mortgage payment would be less than your rent at Abberly Place? Few prospective homeowners truly appreciate how expensive annual maintenance on a house can be. On average, you should expect to spend 1% to 2% of your home’s value on maintenance costs each year. On a $200,000 home, that is $2,000 to $4,000 a year in maintenance.
And that does NOT include property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, home improvement, decorating or any additional landscaping that you decide to do. Home ownership also requires a different type of budgeting discipline. You need to be prepared for the unexpected such as replacing a water heater, a leaky roof, a broken AC/heater, etc.
As a resident of Abberly Place, you have the convenience of knowing exactly what your monthly housing will cost. Our excellent Service Team will take care of your maintenance needs!

Proper Grease Disposal
We wanted to send out a reminder about proper grease disposal. As you all know, grease is not to be poured down the sink, garbage disposal, toilets, or tub drains. Grease can cause the blockages in plumbing lines. If this happens, sewer lines back up and can come up through your tubs and sinks.
This has happened recently and Roto Rooter determined that it was due to cooking grease in the lines. Once you are finished cooking, it is a great idea to pour the grease into a glass or ceramic container and let it cool. Once it is cooled down, it will harden and you can dispose of it in the trash can. This way you do not have to worry about it clogging the pipes and dealing with sewer backing up into your home. Thank you all for your cooperation and feel free to call us with any questions.
Mediterranean Pasta Salad
- 1 pound tricolor pasta, such as bow tie or fusilli
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 2 to 3 teaspoons dijon mustard
- Freshly ground pepper
- 2/3 to 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 1/3 cup diced sun-dried tomatoes
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, julienned
- 1/4 cup diced onion
- 2 large pickled pepperoncini peppers, diced
- 3 tablespoons halved black olives
- 2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano
- 1 1/2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
- 1 1/2 tablespoons grated romano cheese
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until al dente; drain, then rinse with cold water to cool.
- Meanwhile, make the vinaigrette: Whisk the vinegar, mustard, 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste in a small bowl. Gradually whisk in enough of the oil to make a smooth dressing; season with salt and pepper.
- Combine the sun dried tomatoes, basil, onion, pepperoncini, olives and oregano in a bowl. Add the cooked pasta, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Add the vinaigrette and both cheeses and toss. Chill until ready to serve.

Pool Sticks for the Resident Activity Center
Due to the number of pool sticks that we have had to purchase in the last 6 months, we had decided on a new policy. If a resident would like to use the new pool sticks for the Resident Activity Center, you will need to check them out through our office. You may check out one at the time, and keep it for 24 hours. This will allow time for you to come by the office during business hours and return it during business hours the next day. This should not be a problem since we are open 7 days a week. We will keep a log of who checks it out so that we can hold that person responsible if it is damaged or lost.
We have also recently purchased a new billiard set which includes balls, a rack and chalk. We will leave those out at all times. Please feel free to contact our office if you have any questions about this. Thank you.
