Community Bulletin Board

We do have an area on our website where you can list items you want to sell. If you look under resources on AbberlyPlace.com, you will see a drop down screen that will say Community Bulletin Board. From here you can list items that you are wanting to selling (including us…we have some fantastic pieces that we have removed from our models that are practically brand new).

There is a place where you can post job opportunities, events through the area, etc. It is free and we will publicize the items for you. Take advantage of this service we offer. We want to make sure that we are constantly working on things that will make life easier for you. If you have any suggestions, feel free to let us know.

Flag Day

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the U.S. Army Birthdays on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.

In 1916, the president of the United States issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Title 36 of the United States Code, Subtitle I, Part A, CHAPTER 1, § 110 is the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the president's discretion to officially proclaim the observance. On June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday, beginning in the town of Rennerdale. New York Statutes designate the second Sunday in June as Flag Day, a state holiday.

Rent vs. Buying

How many times have you thought that a mortgage payment would be less than your rent at Abberly Place? Few prospective homeowners truly appreciate how expensive annual maintenance on a house can be. On average, you should expect to spend 1% to 2% of your home’s value on maintenance costs each year. On a $200,000 home, that is $2,000 to $4,000 a year in maintenance.

And that does NOT include property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, home improvement, decorating or any additional landscaping that you decide to do. Home ownership also requires a different type of budgeting discipline. You need to be prepared for the unexpected such as replacing a water heater, a leaky roof, a broken AC/heater, etc.

Summer Corn Salad

This fresh and flavorful salad features buttery yellow corn tossed with chunks of tomato and onion with a fresh basil vinaigrette.

  • 6 ears corn, husked and cleaned
  • 3 large tomatoes, diced
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • salt and pepper to taste

  1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook corn in boiling water for 7 to 10 minutes, or until desired tenderness. Drain, cool, and cut kernels off the cob with a sharp knife.
  2. In a large bowl, toss together the corn, tomatoes, onion, basil, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Chill until serving.

North Carolina Waterfalls

Do you need somewhere to vacation this summer? We have the perfect place for you to visit, and it is right here in North Carolina! Welcome to one of the most beautiful places on Earth - the mountains of western North Carolina!

There are literally hundreds of waterfalls and miles and miles of hiking trails in this area - you could spend a lifetime trying to see everything. Western North Carolina is blessed to have over a million acres of national forests, national parks, state parks, and other public lands for our enjoyment and use.

The Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests comprise most of this land and offer multiple uses including hiking, water, mountain biking, camping, and horseback riding. Our state parks offer the same activities and contain some of the lesser known hidden jewels.

Summer Begins

June 21st is the first day of summer. While some of us dread the hot summer months, others look forward to this all year long. This means longer days, concerts, cookouts, fire flies, pool and beach season, vacation and many more fun things. What is there not to like about summer?!

Quotes of the Month

When one door closes, another opens.
But often we look so long, so regretfully,
upon the closed door,
that we fail to see the one that is opened for us.

- Helen Keller

Forgiving is not a gift to someone else.
Forgiving is your gift to yourself -
a great gift - the gift of happiness.

- Jonathan Lockwood Huie
